About XFINITY Internet

About Xfinity High Speed Internet

Xfinity is the internet service provider and cable services brand of Comcast Cable Communications. The company was incorporated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1969 and by 2001 was the largest cable services provider in the United States. Since then Comcast has acquired several smaller cable company rivals and and in recent years added several media properties to their portfolio including NBCUniversal, Dreamworks Animation and the European media company Sky. The publicly-held company employs 184,000 people and posts revenues upwards of $94 Billion annually. They are still headquartered in Philadelphia, PA and operate in 40 states plus the District of Columbia.

Features of Xfinity Internet

Features of Comcast's Xfinity internet service include:

  • Cable internet plans with download speeds from 10 mbps up to 350 Mbps.
  • 1 to 2 Gigabit DOCSIS 3.1 plans available in some areas. Term agreements are required to get discount rates, but discounts are locked-in for 24 to 36 months.
  • Xfinity xFi home wi fi modems with enhanced access control and security features.
  • Xfinity X1 digital TV with live TV, sports, music and streaming with a built-in DVR and 4K streaming. Access Netflix, Hulu, HBO and Prime PLUS network and cable TV.
  • Stay connected at over 1 million Xfinity wifi hotspots at no extra cost. Available with most Comcast plans.

While Comcast services are available in more than 40 states, gigabit speed Xfinity service is available only in select areas where infrastructure upgrades have been completed. Thankfully for consumers, improvements in cable modem technology has allowed Comcast and other cable providers to provide vastly improved speeds using older copper-line networks. In most Comcast service areas, 100 Mbps internet speeds are easily achievable with a newer modem. Newer modems also include features like wi fi and home networking.

Like most residential cable internet services, the service offered by Comcast for residential customers is typically "asynchronous" meaning that upload speeds are restricted to a fraction of download speeds. Typical upload speeds for a 100 Mbps plan are capped at around 5 Mbps where uploads for 1000 Mbps consumer plans are capped at around 35 Mbps. A data cap of 1 Terabyte applies to many plans, but the cap is more than enough for most users and unlimited or flexible overage plans can be purchased by customers requiring higher than normal data limits. Actual speeds for Xfinity plans can vary based on local congestion. Read more about cable internet connections.

In areas where Comcast has upgraded their regional infrastructure from copper-line to fiber optic cable, speeds of up to 2 Gbps (2000 Mbps) can be achieved. Unlike direct-to-customer fiber optic connections offered by some ISPs, the latest consumer DOCSIS modems used by cable companies like Comcast don't require a fiber line into the home in order to achieve gigabit speeds. Area infrastructure upgrades are still required though which limits the availability to select areas. Where available, a 1000 Mbps internet connection is ideal for heavy internet users, gamers, and modern households with multiple connected devices. For users requiring higher upload speeds, Comcast does offer a symmetrical plan with a 2000 mbps download speed and upload speed. Read more about fiber optic and gigabit internet service.

History of Comcast

Comcast began as a single-system cable operator in in 1963. The company was founded by Ralph Roberts, who purchased the American Cable Systems company in Tupelo, Mississippi. Over the next few years, American Cable Systems purchased a marketing firm and a Muzak franchise. In 1969, the company was renamed Comcast and incorporated in Philadelphia, PA. Comcast continued to grow as a cable provider, doubling in size by 1986. Two years later, in 1988, Comcast purchase 50% of Storer Communications, reaching a total of over 2 million customers.

Comcast continued to grow its home cable and cellular phone business throughout the 1990s. In 1996, Comcast launched its first residential broadband internet service. The service was originally available in Baltimore, Maryland, and Sarasota, Florida. Comcast continued acquiring cable companies and investing in television networks like QVC, Style, and sports networks. They sold their cellular business in 1999.

In 2000 and 2001, Comcast gradually acquired AT&T Broadband customers, increasing their broadband customer base throughout the Eastern Seaboard. Comcast and AT&T Broadband merged in 2002, forming the largest broadband cable company in the U.S. with over 22 million customers. This included 3.3 million high speed data customers. That same year, Comcast launched their high speed internet business. By 2009, Comcast was the largest internet service provider in the United States. Comcast introduced a new high speed wireless network called Comcast High-Speed 2go that year.

Xfinity was first introduced in 2010 as the brand for all of Comcast's technology platforms and products. The service initially focused on cable and TV streaming products. By 2011, it had grown to offer residential internet service to more than 40 million households across the United States. Comcast developed additional Xfinity services like self-installation for internet, TV and phone services, as well as public wi fi networks for Xfinity customers.

In 2016, Comcast introduced Gigabet internet speeds using DOCSIS 3.1 technology. This service was initially available in Atlanta, Nashville and Chicago. Comcast expanded their coverage and by 2018, they were the largest provider of gigabit-speed internet in the United States.

Comcast is continuously expanding and improving their Xfinity internet services. Products like Xfinity xFi and Xfinity mobile enhance the internet experience for customers.

Why Get Internet An Xfinity Internet Plan?

One advantage of Comcast is that their Xfinity plans can be ordered with no term agreement and no early termination fee. The best pricing may not be available without an agreement, but promo pricing without a contract is typically better than the regular rate. Better deals are often available for new customers who agree to a minimum term (usually 12 months). The best deals are made available to those who agree to longer terms like 24 months or more. Promotions for Comcast Xfinity internet plans typically require agreements of 12 months or 24 months which may include an early termination fee. A wi fi router/modem may not be included with all Xfinity internet plans.

It is possible to use your own modem or pay a rental fee as opposed to buying one outright. However, customers who use their own devices do not have access to equipment upgrades, advanced security, and wi fi controls. Comcast provides a list of third party devices that are compatible with Xfinity internet service.

If you choose to use Xfinity equipment, it comes with lots of extra features. The Xfinity xFi Gateway all-in-one modem and router is available in two plans. The basic xFi costs an additional $14 per month and the xFi Complete costs an additional $25 per month. With the basic xFi plan, customers get advanced security, device upgrades and tech support. The xFi also allows customers to see which devices are connected to their wi fi network and pause wi fi for certain devices. The xFi Complete has all of these benefits, as well as unlimited data and an xFi pod device if necessary.

Prices are typically based on a single outlet self-install without a technician visit. If a Comcast technician is required, an installation fee may be charged. It is advisable to ask for complete details in advance of ordering and avoid any surprises. It also never hurts to ask for a better deal. Unadvertised promotions or discounts may often be made available to new customers or returning customers.

Comcast also offers other home services like cable TV, phone and security systems. There are many Xfinity internet packages that allow customers to bundle their internet service with TV and home phone service, with the Xfinity Triple Play program. Bundling cable TV and internet service gives customers access to on-demand and streaming options as well.

Comcast Xfinity competitors include other cable companies like Spectrum and Cox as well as ISPs like AT&T and CenturyLink. When moving from a competing ISP, many companies will offer a better deal or even a contract buy-out as an incentive for new customers to switch. It's worth asking if a discount or promotion will apply to your Xfinity order. Even if a discount can't be offered, equipment rental fees, installation fees or other charges may be waived.
