About HughesNet Internet

HughesNet, an EchoStar Corporation company, was developed by the Hughes Network Systems of Germantown, MD in 1996. Hughes Network Systems, also known for the creation of Direct TV and the first cellular car phones, created HughesNet to provide one-way and two-way satellite internet access for work-at-home consumers. By the end of the 90’s HughesNet quickly became the largest internet by satellite service with one million active users in North America.

The 2000s saw the introduction of a two-way broadband internet service with Hughes’ Direcway and Spaceway providing broadband internet protocol network services and the first commercial satellite with on-board switching and routing. In 2012 the EchoStar XVII satellite launched by Hughes enabled HughesNet high-speed internet services across North America, expanding the total capacity for HughesNet service to over 2 million Americans.

Following the success of the EchoStar XVII, Hughes launched EchoStar XIX in 2016. It is the world’s highest capacity broadband satellite and is currently powering HughesNet's satellite internet service, HughesNet Gen5. The EchoStar XIX offered 50% more capacity and greater speeds. Its JUPITER System technology managed by a single network management system was the ideal solution for commercial air routes throughout the world.

In 2018 Hughes’ payload on the Telstar 19 VANTAGE satellite utilized Ka-band capacity to extend connectivity to more than 90% of people in South America. Further expanding their network in that year Hughes Network Systems launched joint ventures to deliver high speed satellite internet connectivity across Africa, the Middle East, and Southwest Asia. Their goal was to increase access to affordable, high-speed, satellite broadband services to drive social and economic change.

Features of HughesNet Plans

  • Fast Speeds: HughesNet Gen5 is designed to deliver 25 Mbps download speeds and 3 Mbps upload speeds.

Satellite Internet Benefits

The main reason to use satellite internet is if you live in an area where other internet options such as cable or DSL aren’t available. Also, when compared to a dialup connection satellite internet data upload and download speeds will be considerably faster. It is important to note that no landline phone connection is required for satellite broadband.

Limitations of Satellite Internet

High-latency is one of the greatest limitations that is encountered with satellite internet. It is caused by the long distances that the broadband signal has to travel. This means that it can limit the use of many higher bandwidth applications which are the mainstay of broadband connections. Online real-time gaming is not feasible, but while video conferencing and voice over IP will work so long as you allow for the extra lag. Services like Netflix, Hulu and Prime Video are all accessible but streaming in standard definition is recommended rather than HD.

Weather is another factor that can influence the effectiveness of data transfers with satellite internet. A line of sight is required between the dish and the satellite orbiting above earth. Anything that gets in the way of this, such rain or snow, can cause errors in the connection. Small weather disturbances shouldn't affect the link however a large storm could cause disruptions.

HughesNet's direct competitor in the U.S. for satellite internet is Viasat. Other competitors include wireless providers like Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility. In areas where DSL and cable service are available, satellite providers are generally not competitive, except on the fringes of those service areas where wired speeds are reduced.
