How fast is Verizon DSL? Verizon High Speed Internet?
DSL service speeds can be as high as 15 Mbps but the physical distance between the user's dsl modem and the central office ultimately limits these speeds. Like most residential DSL services, internet speeds are "asynchronous" - meaning that uploads are restricted to a fraction of download speeds. Typical upload speeds range from 384 Kbps to 1 Mbps for their wired DSL. This is technically referred to as ADSL (asynchronous digital subscriber line) but most companies including Verizon refer to it simply as DSL. SDSL (Synchronous DSL) with unthrottled upload speeds is typically reserved for business customers requiring higher upload speeds and improved network availability. For users in rural areas or with those slow internet connections, but within wireless network coverage, it may be preferable to use wireless services for their primary internet connection. Unlike DSL internet, which is arguably on its way out as internet service providers upgrade their networks, Verizon makes use of a state-of-the-art fiber optic network that is steadily growing. With home internet service on the Verizon 100% Fiber FiOS network users can achieve gigabit connection speeds of up to 940 Mbps download and 880 Mbps upload with no data cap. Lower cost Verizon high speed plans are available in other download speed tiers including 100 Mbps, 200 Mbps and 400 Mbps. These high bandwidth connections are ideal for heavy internet users, PC and console gamers, and modern households with multiple connected devices. FiOS internet plans typically offer symmetrical to near-symmetrical service meaning that upload speeds are the same, or nearly the same as downloads. FiOS fiber service is currently available to more than 15 million homes within the area they serve. Gigabit speeds are not available with all internet plans, but speeds of 500 Mbps are offered at a minimum where FiOS is available.
DSL Internet Upgrades
The good news for rural customers outside of the upgraded networks is that the old copper landlines are slowly being replaced with fiber. Verizon's FiOS high speed internet includes a wi-fi capable gateway/router that connects directly to their upgraded network. Read more about fiber optic and gigabit internet.
Wireless Home Internet
For customers outside of the Verizon DSL or FiOS service areas, wireless home internet plans area now available. 4G LTE plans are available for a monthly internet rate of $40 and 5G internet plans (where available) start at $50.
Verizon High Speed Deals and Details
Verizon frequently offers to pay the early termination fees for users stuck in a competitor's home high internet contract as an incentive to switch to Verizon DSL or Verizon FiOS high speed internet. The best promotional deals typically require a 1 year to 3 year agreement for which their may be an early termination fee, but an internet package without an agreement may be available at a higher cost. An equipment rental fee and set-up charge may apply for some plans. Users may also be charged an infrastructure improvement fee and fees for accessing local channels on FiOS TV. When comparing Verizon high speed internet deals it is advisable to consider the total cost for the term of the agreement including taxes, additional fees and the monthly price once promotional terms have expired.
While bundled Verizon high speed plans including phone and TV may appear to offer the most attractive discounts, a standalone Verizon high speed internet plan may be appropriate for "cord cutting" in an area where internet access speeds are at least 15 Mbps. That said, users looking to stream HD video and simultaneously connect multiple devices may find that even a 15 Mbps DSL connection is not adequate for their needs. Perspective cord cutters in areas serviced by FiOS fiber plans will find a gigabit high speed internet connection to be more than sufficient for this purpose.
Verizon competitors include other DSL providers like AT&T and CenturyLink along with cable high speed internet providers like Spectrum and Xfinity (Comcast). Rural DSL customers with slower connections may also find that modern satellite isp's are a serious competitor to wired high speed internet services.
