Consolidated Communications Company Overview
Consolidated Communications was founded in 1894 as the Mattoon Telephone Company. Throughout the 20th century the company acquired smaller regional telephone companies and in 1997 changed their name to Consolidated Communications. They have continued to acquire smaller communications companies and slowly expanded their geographic footprint. Their acquisition of FairPoint Communications in 2017 brought the companies service footprint up to 23 states.
Consolidated Internet Service
Like many telecommunications providers, Consolidated has been slowly upgrading their network from copper-line to fiber-optic cable. The company has reportedly committed to completing this upgrade by 2025, but it is not yet complete and many areas still have slower and more technologically limiting copper-line infrastructure. For customers still not upgraded, pricing in your area will likely be higher and service more limited compared to areas with fully upgraded fiber internet.
Copper Line Internet Service
In areas that have not yet been upgraded to fiber internet, copper-line DSL service is available with speeds of up to 50 Mbps depending on the location. Phone service is also offered in areas served by Consolidated Communications.
Fidium Fiber Internet Service
The consolidated fiber network is currently sitting at nearly 50,000 route miles and the company has committed to installing fiber throughout it's network by 2025. Consolidated fiber is marketed under it's Fidium brand name and plans are offered with speeds of up to 1000 Mbps. Currently, their most comprehensive fiber footprint is in the northeast, including Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire.
Consolidated Communications Internet Coverage
Consolidated internet service is offered mainly in the northeastern states of the U.S, but their service areas extends to select communities in 23 states. Consolidated Communications Charges & Fees
In areas served by Consolidated fiber, service charges are limited to state taxes and fees as mandated by individual states. There are no service contracts and installation is free. Fees may be charged for additional services and equipment such as wireless extenders, or by adding TV to your consolidated services.
In areas served only by copper-line DSL, a one year contract is required and includes an early termination fee. Additional fees may include a Broadband Cost Recovery Fee of $2.97 per month, and a network care and equipment lease fee ranging from $6.95 to $11.95 per month. Speeds are not guaranteed and the average speed can be affected by network congestion and other technical limitations.
